Year 4 Investigation- Human impact on environment

This half term, Year 4 children have been exploring the impact of human activities on the environment. One key issue they have focused on is how microplastics enter our oceans and, ultimately, our food chain.

Microplastics are tiny plastic particles that come from broken-down larger plastics, synthetic clothing fibres and personal care products. These particles end up in waterways, where marine life can ingest them, leading to potential harm not only to sea creatures but also to humans who consume seafood.

To better understand this problem, our Year 4 children conducted an experiment to find ways to stop microplastics from entering our food chain. They explored different filtration methods and materials that could trap microplastics before they reached water sources. They carefully observed their results and discussed which solutions were most effective in preventing microplastics from passing through.
