Last week, our Year 5 students took their geometry lessons to a whole new level by drawing and measuring angles right on their desks with whiteboard pens! It was hands-on, interactive, and a fun way for the children to dive deeper into the world of angles.
Armed with protractors and their creativity, the students spent the lesson practicing how to draw different types of angles—acute, obtuse, right, and reflex—straight onto their desks! With the easy-to-erase whiteboard pens, the classroom quickly transformed into a massive geometry workspace. It was a fantastic way to make the abstract concept of angles more tangible and accessible.
The excitement was palpable as the children worked in groups, challenging each other to measure angles they had just drawn. They were not only learning how to use protractors but also sharpening their problem-solving skills as they navigated the process of measuring angles accurately. The room was full of chatter as students compared results, gave each other tips, and celebrated their successes.
Using their desks as a canvas also allowed them to experiment freely. If they made a mistake or wanted to try a different angle, all they had to do was wipe it away and start fresh—making it a great way to learn through trial and error. The whiteboard pens were a hit, and they helped students feel more confident in their learning.
By the end of the session, each student had a clear understanding of how to measure angles with a protractor, as well as the ability to recognise different types of angles in the real world. They even started spotting angles in the classroom—on doors, windows, and even in the shapes of the furniture!
This hands-on activity was a perfect example of how engaging and interactive learning can help children better understand mathematical concepts. We can't wait to see what other creative ways our Year 5 students will continue to explore Maths throughout the term!
