Scotland is bordered by England in the southeast; the Atlantic Ocean and the Sea of the Hebrides in the north and west. And by the North Sea in the northeast and by the Irish Sea in the south.
Scotland is administratively divided into 32 council areas. It covers an area of 77,933 square kilometres. Scotland is 2nd largest country in the United Kingdom. Scotland was once covered by glaciers during the Ice Age and hence glaciation has highly affected the rocky landscape of Scotland.
There are three topographic areas in Scotland. These are the Highlands and Islands in the north and west; the Central Lowlands and the Southern Uplands. Did you know that the capital city of England, London, has a population of 9,780,000 people. Do you know the population of Scotland is 5.51 Million. Glasgow is the Largest city in Scotland with a Population of 1,708,000. Edinburgh is the 2nd largest city in Scotland with a Population of 559,000. It is also the capital city of Scotland. Aberdeen is the 3rd Largest city in Scotland with a population of 230,170. There are many places to visit in Scotland, in particular Edinburgh, for example the national museum of Scotland, Edinburgh castle and even camera obscura and world of illusions.
The highlands and islands have mountain ranges like the Grampians. In the west of the highlands there are mountains that can be up to 1200 metres high. Scotland has more mountainous terrain than anywhere else in the British isles. Mountains in Scotland are categorised by their height. Mountains over 3000 feet are known as Munros. Ben Nevis in the Grampian mountains is the highest Munro in Scotland, and it is the highest point above sea level. As well as mountains there are lots of valleys in the Highlands, called Glens. The Great Glen is a natural travelling route in this mountainous area.
Scotland has many islands, however only around 95 have people living on them. The largest group of islands include the Orkneys and Shetland isles. Scotland’s mainland has over 6000 miles of coastline. A loch is a glen filled with water. Sea lochs are open to the sea. Loch Ness is one of the most famous lochs in the world because some people believe that the Loch Ness monster lives there. Loch Ness holds more water than all of the lakes in England and Wales put together. I hope that you have learnt something interesting about Scotland today!
